Imaging makeover at new children’s hospital

Siemens Healthcare has supplied a range of diagnostic imaging technologies to the new Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital, which provides an integrated paediatric service to Greater Manchester and North West England.

The Trust’s children’s services, originally based at three Greater Manchester locations, are now available at a single hospital.

For MRI scanning, the hospital has installed a Magnetom Avanto 1.5 Tesla system. This has a number of patient comfort features that make it suitable for paediatric patients, including a low table position (47cm) and the capacity to examine patients feet-first.

The hospital has also installed an adaptive Somatom Definition AS+ CT scanner. This actively changes the dose during examinations to ensure that the patient receives only the necessary amount. It can be used for rapid head-to-foot scanning.

Siemens has also supplied the hospital with an Artis zee multi-purpose interventional system and an Axiom Luminos dRF combined system for fluoroscopy and radiography.

“The installations are part of an initiative to enhance paediatric radiology services at the Trust,” said David Garnett, Superintendent Radiographer at Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital. “We were very happy with the Siemens equipment at the previous site and so it made sense to continue with Siemens for a range of solutions in the new hospital build.”

“It is testament to the strength of our product ranges that Siemens was selected to provide a wide variety of imaging equipment, from MR and CT systems to interventional angiography,” said John Brady, Regional Sales Manager at Siemens Healthcare. “We have a good relationship with the Trust and were delighted to supply some of our most advanced technology that has been designed to provide a more patient-friendly experience.”
