Medtronic gives surgical products to Haiti relief

Medtronic, Inc. has donated nearly $900,000 worth of medical devices and surgical supplies to support the disaster relief effort in Haiti.

The urgent need for means to treat serious crush and fracture injuries has led Medtronic to provide spinal surgical implants, orthopaedic implants and limb replacement devices for reconstruction.

In addition, the company has donated surgical perfusion disposables and blood and oxygen filters for field and hospital use. All products were identified as high-need by agencies working directly with medical relief efforts.

Medtronic has partnered with US charity Hospital Sisters Mission Outreach to co-ordinate distribution of the donated medical products, and encourages medical professionals and aid organisations requesting product donations to contact that organisation directly.

Combined with $1.2 million in cash pledges (see our news report on 3 February 2010), this donation raises Medtronic’s total response above $2.1 million.
