A new continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) system that enhances patient comfort, promoting compliance with the treatment of sleep apnoea, has been launched in Europe.
The S9 Series from ResMed has a lightweight design that minimises machine noise and movement restriction. The system allows the pressure, temperature and humidity of the air the patient breathes while sleeping to be pre-set or automatically optimised.
CPAP therapy is the most effective treatment for sleep apnoea, a condition that causes daytime sleepiness, leading to potential accidents as well as memory loss and cardiac disorders. However, compliance with CPAP treatment is often poor. The S9 Series is expected to help more sleep apnoea patients adhere to the treatment.
The S9 will also help clinicians to make more informed decisions. It treats obstructive sleep apnoea, but also detects central sleep apnoea and stores sleep quality data for clinical follow-up (with remote monitoring options).
The Easy-Breathe motor of the S9 reduces noise levels, while the SlimLine tubing has 35% less volume than competing systems.
“We are thrilled to introduce a true revolution in positive airway pressure therapy,” said Michael Farrell, SVP of the Global Sleep Business Unit at ResMed. “ResMed is convinced that the S9 Series will contribute to improved patient comfort, compliance and outcomes and in the long run, should lead to more healthcare savings.
“In addition to the advanced features, clinical algorithms and connectivity options, the S9 Series design fits right into any patient’s home. This next generation CPAP series no longer has the look and feel of hospital equipment – S9 Series is true homecare at its best.”
